Rats! We thought that this Competition might run for a week or so and had prepared a few more clues, however we have just checked the list and a number of sharp eyed gold bugs have got it.

Now we did say that you could only have ’shot’ per day though so the first competitor, therefore Andrew is disqualified for entering two names on the same day. Looking further down the list we have Ben who is the first person, although only first by seconds, to come up with the correct answer which is Waihi in New Zealand.

The mine is called Martha and is operated by the Newmont Mining Corporation. We are planning a visit to this mine on the 20th January 2008 to learn a little more about this particular operation. We understand from the local residents that it still produces around $1.0 million per week in gold and silver.

The following photographs were taken close to mine over the last few weeks and were to be used as clues, but there you go, it was too easy for our readers.

We will contact Ben shortly to ascertain where to send his prize, this wonderful bottle of plonk costing us a massive $0.45! Only kidding!

  1. You should also ask a few of the residents about the nearby house which sunk into the ground as a consequence of this massive pit! In the last few years it’s not been a popular place to be especially as a town closely surrounds it (although the town would probably not have been there in the first place had gold not been discovered), but by the looks of it, the mine is a great deal bigger than it was only 10 years ago, before the expansion.
The cornish pumphouse looked fantastic when it was covered in creepers and surrounded by natural bush. Its a shame that it looks a bit stark now!
    Enjoy the trip!
